Profile

Eric Chen is a Professor and Department head at the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Hong Kong. His research focus on early intervention and treatment for psychotic disorders (including schizophrenia), as well as their underlying brain cognitive mechanisms.
He has been leading the development of the early intervention for psychosis in Hong Kong (the EASYprogramme). He is also leading the Hong Kong Jockey Club Early Psychosis Project. Prof Chen has been conducting key studies on in schizophrenia and first-episode psychosis. Some of the studies have been published in leading international journals such as the British Medical Journal, the Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Internationally, Prof. Chen was Vice-President of the International Early Psychosis Association and the Foundation Chairman of the Asian Network for Early Psychosis (ANEP). Prof. Chen has held visiting Professorships at the Harvard Medical School and the Institute of Mental Health, Singapore.

Research Interests 

  • Early intervention for psychosis - Early detection and treatment of psychosis, optimal treatment for psychotic disorder, brain, cognitive and psychopathological predictors of course and outcome.
  • Cognitive Neuroscience of psychopathology - Using cognitive neuroscience methods to study brain dysfunctions in psychopathological conditions, including memory, attention, motor, executive functions, semantics, language and communicative processes.
  • Suicide studies - Factorings associated with suicidal ideation in early psychosis, psychological autopsy studies
